Directions
In a small microwave-safe bowl, warm the milk and butter. Pour into bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment. Sprinkle yeast on top, then add sugar, salt, egg, and flour. Mix on medium speed until well combined and dough forms.
Transfer dough to a greased bowl and cover with a warm towel. Allow dough to rise until it doubles in size, 1-1 1⁄2 hrs.
On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll dough into a 10×14” rectangle.
Spread softened butter over the dough. In a bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and ¼ cup of the chopped bacon. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the buttered dough, pressing it gently so it sticks.
Roll up the dough, pinch and seal the edges, then place it seam-side down. Cut a ½” off each end and discard. Gently push inward on both ends of the dough log so it compacts slightly, as it may have stretched out during the rolling process.
Using a very sharp knife, cut 12 slices.
Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Place rolls in a greased baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap and a towel. Let rise again until the rolls are puffed up, doubled in size, and touching each other in the pan—45 mins to 1 hr. (If short on time, skip this step.)
Bake for 25-30 mins until golden brown on the edges.
Icing: In a stand mixer with a whisk, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, maple syrup, and vanilla on low for 30 secs, then medium-high until smooth and fluffy. Spread on warm rolls. Serve with extra syrup and bacon.
